Lachlan Hurley

Lachlan Hurley is an Indigenous Mackay-based diesel fitter apprentice. He joined Bis Industries in January 2009 at the Burton mine.

His supervisors are impressed with his work and he is enjoying the challenges of working and living in the mining industry.

We recognise the vital importance of our ‘community license to operate’. Bis Industries looks for ways to contribute to the environments in which we operate by supporting employees who are actively involved with a local community or charitable group.

2007

In February 2007 Bis Industries sponsored an Acute Life Support Course at Leonora District High School in Western Australia. The project funded a smart board and learning tools and gave all students access to technology-based learning within the school. The aim was to develop important life skills beyond the school gates for students.

Since 2007 we have provided sponsorship to the Karlkurla Language & Culture Aboriginal Corporation to develop a calendar that supports the language and culture in the Goldfields region.

2008

Bis Industries joined forces with a customer to support Marie Taylor in the research and development of a Nyungar Language Wordlist to revive, maintain and teach Nyungar traditions through language. The Aboriginal knowledge gained from the research will result in a Nyungar Dictionary “Yelekitj Koorndaam”.

2009

Working together with our customer, we added an Indigenous focus to our customer's Tenby10 project. The goal is to raise the Indigenous community’s awareness of how to mitigate the health risks from working and living in proximity to the mine and port in Port Pirie.
